Matt Hughes
Rhythm Athletics founder
Matt Hughes is a two-time Olympian, Canadian record-holder in the 3,000m steeplechase, and one of the country’s most accomplished distance runners. With top-10 finishes at both the 2016 and 2021 Olympic Games and a gold medal at the 2015 Pan American Games.
When Matt founded Rhythm his goal was to develop top Canadian athletes and give them a place to train in Canada. Now coaching with Athletics Canada he looks to keep those same foundations in place.
Whether coaching national or club athletes, Matt creates a high-accountability, growth-oriented environment that reflects the discipline, intensity, and insight of an international competitor. His approach is grounded, thoughtful, and tailored to help each athlete maximize their potential on and off the track.
Paddy Birch
Rhythm Athletics coach
Paddy Birch is an experienced distance runner and coach originally from Ireland, now based in Toronto.
Since relocating to Toronto, he has trained and worked alongside some of Canada’s top athletes and coaches, further refining his knowledge of modern training techniques and athlete development.
As a coach, Paddy has a unique understanding of work life balance. As a new father and working a full-time physical day job while still training with olympians he understands the importance of finding that sweet spot for his athletes. His approach is grounded, supportive, and individualized, blending time-tested methods with adaptive strategies to fit each athlete’s goals, lifestyle, and ability.
With an emphasis on consistent progress, injury prevention, and sustainable training habits, Paddy empowers his athletes to grow in confidence, fitness, and enjoyment of the sport. His coaching is not just about building speed and endurance—it’s about fostering a lifelong love of running and helping athletes reach their full potential.
Dave Reid
Assistant Coach/Mentor
Dave is a former Canadian 1500m and 3000m record-holder and national team athlete, now recognized as one of the country’s most respected middle-distance coaches. With over 40 years in the sport, Dave brings a rare combination of elite racing experience and athlete-first coaching philosophy to his work.
Dave is known for his calm, clear communication and commitment to athlete well-being. He promotes a balanced training environment that values technical execution, mental resilience. Whether coaching Olympic hopefuls or club-level runners, Dave focuses on building not just faster athletes—but more thoughtful, confident, and prepared competitors.
